MITZI BURKITT, PARALEGAL
Mitzi is a 40-year veteran of the paralegal profession. Most of her career has involved work in civil and complex commercial litigation. Mitzi has significant experience in trial as well as in managing large volumes of documents, electronic data, and overseeing document reviews. Most recently she was the lead paralegal for Plaintiffs in litigation that spanned six years and resulted in a $391 million verdict in favor of Plaintiffs following a five-week jury trial in federal court in the Eastern District of Missouri. The lawsuit involved federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) claims, as well as various fraud and breach of fiduciary duty claims against 45 defendants, including banks, accountants and executives in the insurance and death care industries. The case also involved several terabytes of data and extensive electronic discovery.
Prior to working on her most recent assignment, Mitzi held the lead paralegal role in the defense of a large oil & gas class action lawsuit in Oklahoma where she worked closely with experts and Reilly’s graphic design team to develop courtroom visuals of complex oil & gas reservoir engineering concepts. She was also part of the defense team representing the University of Colorado in a highly publicized Title IX action brought by former students who claimed they were sexually assaulted by University football players. Mitzi was also the lead paralegal for the winning trial team in a trademark infringement case against a large international corporation that resulted in a multi-million dollar jury verdict following a three-week federal court trial in Colorado. Prior to that, she headed up the paralegal team in a series of state consumer fraud class action lawsuits brought against a public utility in seven mid-western and western states. She also has experience managing complex medical and legal malpractice cases, and products liability.
Mitzi has lectured on managing complex litigation on behalf of the Institute for Paralegal Education, and on electronic court filings at Denver University Law School. She currently volunteers on a task force of the Colorado Lawyers Committee related to children’s issues. She is also a past newsletter editor of the Rocky Mountain Paralegal Association.
Among the skills Mitzi enjoys most as a paralegal are finding “needles in haystacks”, using investigative tools to trace complex financial transactions, and developing innovative and efficient ways to manage large volumes of documents and other evidence. She works closely with information technology experts and routinely follows the latest trends and developments in e-Discovery. Mitzi sees paralegals as a crucial part of any litigation and the “glue that holds the team together”.
Before joining Reilly, she was the head paralegal in the Denver office of McKenna & Cuneo, L.L.P., a 275-attorney international firm.
“I have always been very interested in graphic design and photography. Here at The Firm, I enjoy working with the graphic design department in creating the outstanding courtroom visuals we prepare for our clients. Outside The Firm, I work on my digital photography skills—some of my photos have appeared on The Firm’s ’art wall’, where lawyers and staff are invited to post their creative efforts. I’ve also had my photography on display at the Denver Art Society gallery in Denver.”
